If we look at the numbers, it’s enough to send a chill down your spine: 18th out of 50,200 finishers. 2h23’48”—while Biwott, the Kenyan winner, finished in 2h10’34”—second among Italians at the finish line and second among Europeans, behind only Andrea Lalli. But when we look at the heart rates, we get out of breath—we’re pushing past the threshold. What a thrill to see “our” Carmine Buccilli, wearing his white Oxyburn 1480 Running Track socks, on live TV, on the front row of the starting line at the New York City Marathon—the most famous and important marathon in the world. Starting out front with the world’s best wasn’t enough for him; he wanted to savor every bit of that excitement and share plenty of it with us, so the cameras often focused on him as he led the pack, setting the pace in the race’s opening kilometers. His preparation hadn’t gone as planned; a few physical setbacks had affected him over the past few months, which had already forced Carmine to pull out of the Berlin Marathon in late September. But not New York. You can’t skip New York; you can’t say no to it. Now it’s time for a bit of recovery, and then—we’re sure—Carmine will treat us to more thrills and victories in some other amazing marathon.
