The 34-year-old from Ciociaria, already a hero of the New York City Marathon, won the 18th Province of Latina – City of Sabaudia Marathon with a performance of the highest caliber. Marco Romano finished second, more than eleven minutes behind.
Running isn’t for everyone, even though many people do it. Running long distances at a fast pace, however, is something only a few can do. But leaving fifty thousand competitors behind over ten kilometers during the world’s most famous marathon—now that’s a feat that only one athlete manages to pull off every once in a while. This year, that feat was accomplished by Carmine Buccilli, a 34-year-old who ranks among the strongest middle-distance runners and ultramarathoners on the Italian running scene: the race in question is the New York City Marathon.
A one-off feat? Ten kilometers of glory? None of the above. Proof of this is the major challenge that Carmine completed on Sunday, December 6, in Latina and Sabaudia—the setting for the Latina Marathon – City of Sabaudia, where he won the 42km race and also set a new course record with a time of 2h19’14”, exactly two and a half minutes off his personal best, set this year in Rotterdam at 2h16’44”, and, above all, finishing more than eleven minutes ahead of Marco Romano, who placed second as he did in 2014.
He set out intending to test himself over 30 kilometers, much like he had done in New York, but just as he was about to ease up, a phenomenal Carmine Buccilli decided he still had the legs to “dominate the race”… And that’s exactly what he did, setting a new marathon record even as he slowed down noticeably in the final kilometers.
Could it also be thanks to the Oxyburn compression socks he always wears during training and competitions? We think so!
