He was born in 1962 in Acapulco.
Enrique Corcuera, a Mexican, wanted to build a pop tennis court in the backyard of his villa. Since there were walls right next to the space available for the court, he came up with the idea of incorporating the walls as an integral part of the playing field.
Corcuera then established the rules for the new game and named it padel.
This explains why this sport is the most popular in Latin America, while in Europe, the country with the most enthusiasts is Spain, with 4.5 million amateur players.
In Italy, the first Italian Padel Federation (F.I.G.P.) was founded in February 1991, but its real success came just a few years ago, as demonstrated by a study by Banca Ifis.
This study showed that there are 6,000 active padel courts in Italy (there were just 1,000 in 2019). In 2022, 880,000 rackets were sold, compared to 180,000 in 2019.
In terms of revenue, the sector is projected to generate a total of 693 million euros in 2022, a 25% increase compared to 2021. The largest share comes from direct revenue related to court rentals, which account for 61% of the total.
