The secret to the perfect throw? It’s still a mystery to me, just as track and field was when I discovered it at fourteen. Certainly, the “C” factor is of enormous importance, but it doesn’t exempt anyone from constant training. Improving day by day, centimeter by centimeter: this is every discus thrower’s mantra.
To prepare for a competitive season, training sessions are very intense. The off-season, in particular, is dedicated to the essential general conditioning needed to tackle the toughest phase—which includes gym work, throws, running, and jumps. Training must be as specific as possible to strengthen each muscle group in a way that supports the corresponding technical movement. As competitions approach, however, quantity gives way to quality.
Technical apparel is the ideal choice for a thorough warm-up, improved blood flow, andoptimized performance. Especially in winter, maintaining a high body temperature is essential for preventing injuries. Oxyburn’s base layers become a comfortable and protective second skin: I wear the Cross T-shirt, which is ultralight and seamless, or the Drop top, which is excellent for supporting the muscles, while the Axo shorts help reduce muscle vibrations.
When you lose sight of your goals, all your plans seem to fall apart. Injuries—of which I’ve had many throughout my career—teach you to recalibrate your life by shifting your focus and to respond to every challenge. During this difficult time, I’ve learned to focus on aspects I would have overlooked during a year packed with competitions with the Fiamme Oro.
Even with gyms closed, my advice is to equip yourself to stay in shape at home with minimal equipment. There are countless exercises you can do, but determination and consistency are essential. That’s what I always tell my students, from professional athletes to the 80-year-olds I coach as a personal trainer.
That doesn’t mean you should stop pursuing your dreams. Mine remains to make the Italian team for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. I couldn’t live without competition, without the feeling of giving it my all, knowing that, sooner or later, it will lead me to those coveted goals.
Fall 10 times, get back up 11. Knowing that, in the mix of joys and sorrows, the joys will always prevail.
