There are many athletes who, at the starting line, try to squeeze in a few last exercises\u2014muscle stretches? \u2026warm-up? \u2026And then there are those\u2014many, many more\u2014who arrive at the starting area ten minutes before the race begins and, after warming up with a bit of chit-chat, take off like fighter-bombers! So, between stretching fanatics and those who don\u2019t even want to hear about it, who\u2019s right? We discussed this with <strong>Giovanni Vercellone, a physical therapist from Verona<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Doc, so, in the end, is stretching useful or not? Does it work or not?<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u201cThere are many theories about stretching, and they\u2019re all backed by conflicting scientific evidence. One thing is certain: <strong>whether or not you stretch before or after physical activity does not affect the frequency of muscle injuries, and even stretching beforehand does not affect how well the muscles \u2018warm up\u2019 (this has been measured with a thermometer). Let\u2019s say, instead, that it\u2019s essential to stretch regardless, because stretching the muscles makes them more elastic<\/strong>. This reduces stress on the joints and makes movement less tiring, taking advantage of the tissues\u2019 elastic recoil&#8230; Unfortunately, however, it is all too common to see exercises performed\u2026 frankly, incorrectly. Furthermore, having even a basic understanding of anatomy would allow for greater effectiveness and enable one to take advantage of the neurological mechanisms of contraction and relaxation between agonist and antagonist muscles.   <\/p>\n<p>Given, then, that according to much of <strong>the<\/strong> medical literature <strong>, stretching does indeed work\u2014but only when done every day, and certainly not just before or after a race<\/strong>\u2014it is particularly beneficial <strong>to use, both during and after races, Oxyburn\u2019s graduated compression socks, which, thanks to their technical features, provide a sort of massage to the muscles and facilitate recovery after physical exertion.
