{"id":72022,"date":"2016-04-12T09:54:27","date_gmt":"2016-04-12T07:54:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oxyburn.it\/blog\/running-on-dirt-trails-great-muscle-training\/"},"modified":"2016-04-12T09:54:27","modified_gmt":"2016-04-12T07:54:27","slug":"running-on-dirt-trails-great-muscle-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oxyburn.it\/en\/blog\/running-on-dirt-trails-great-muscle-training\/","title":{"rendered":"RUNNING ON DIRT TRAILS: GREAT MUSCLE TRAINING"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"pos-subtitle\">Let&#8217;s take a look at some of the characteristics that distinguish running on pavement from running on dirt trails\u2014perhaps debunking a few myths along the way\u2014and offer some &#8220;tips&#8221; on how to tackle uneven terrain<\/p>\n<p class=\"pos-subtitle\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"pos-subtitle\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1891 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oxyburn.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sterr_7e1cc708eafa1af16e84259a1dfdf54f-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\"><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s set aside the extreme off-road trails\u2014the kind suited for roe deer and experienced trail riders\u2014and focus on what\u2019s known as \u201ccompact\u201d terrain: we\u2019re talking about the trails that wind through the countryside and hills or climb up into the mountains. This terrain is uneven, but not too much so, consisting mostly of compacted dirt and\/or rocks: this is the type of trail that most closely resembles asphalt, though it certainly doesn\u2019t offer the same grip. And it\u2019s precisely <strong>when talking about grip that you realize how trail running isn\u2019t really about speed: the ground absorbs more energy and doesn\u2019t have the same elasticity. Furthermore, running on dirt trails often involves tackling uneven climbs and equally uneven descents<\/strong> that must be navigated with caution\u2026 and, therefore, more slowly than on asphalt.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Dirt trails, therefore\u2014even compact ones\u2014are effective for strength training, as they challenge and strengthen the ankles and knees, as well as the entire musculature of the body<\/strong>. The quintessential training element of natural cross-country terrain is the presence of continuous changes in elevation: uphill and downhill sections, slight inclines, and flat stretches are, in fact, extremely effective for training, allowing for a \u201cnatural\u201d Fartlek workout. <\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t mean that a runner can\u2019t try their hand at some trail running; they just need to be aware that they\u2019re doing it <strong>to build muscle and\/or relax<\/strong> by immersing themselves in a natural setting, far from the traffic, smog, and chaos of our cities\u2026 and <strong>certainly not to improve their speed performance<\/strong>. For that, however, they should find a route that alternates between compact dirt trails and asphalt, with climbs, flat sections, and descents\u2026 <\/p>\n<p><strong>Running on dirt roads, therefore, leads to a natural increase in your average pace per kilometer<\/strong>. While for a professional runner this increase might be two to ten seconds per kilometer, for a novice amateur it can easily be thirty to forty seconds slower than the normal average on pavement. Of course, you\u2019ll improve with experience and training, but it\u2019s important to realize that <strong>you can\u2019t expect the same pace on pavement as on dirt, even when running on flat terrain!<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Running on dirt roads\u2014even on flat terrain\u2014is more tiring than running on asphalt because of the limited traction,<\/strong> which is even more noticeable when going uphill. But the real challenge on natural terrain is the downhills: pay close attention to what you\u2019re doing, don\u2019t get carried away by the excitement, and stay focused\u2026 <strong>Downhill sections on trails are not your friend<\/strong>, unlike on asphalt. Falling on rocks while going downhill is dangerous and can lead to serious injuries!  <\/p>\n<p>That said, run wherever, however, and whenever you like! And above all, have fun!
